Conversation with Elisa Loncon and Yásnaya Elena A. Gil

Yásnaya Elena A. Gil is the fifth guest of the international residency program of CCCB & UOC.

Politics in Spite of the State

Yásnaya Elena A. Gil invites Elisa Loncon, a Mapuche linguist and the president of the Chilean Constitutional Convention in 2021, to reflect on alternatives for political participation based on the organizational tradition of Indigenous peoples.

One of the goals of women’s movements around the world has been to increase women’s participation in various political structures. However, this process is not without its conflicts, especially when this political participation takes place within historically patriarchal and racist structures. What are the main challenges Indigenous women face when it comes to political participation in governmental and non-governmental structures? Should they participate with the government or in spite of it? How can we think about politics beyond the structures of the state?

In this session, the linguist, writer, and researcher Yásnaya Elena A. Gil invites Elisa Loncon, a linguist, activist, and president of the Chilean Constitutional Convention in 2021, to reflect on the political alternatives that exist in or are being built from the organizational traditions of Indigenous peoples.
